The use of the phrase North-South divide has not only become a part of public discourse but also led to many issues at the global level. The use of the term North-South continues to overlook how often simplistic words end up shaping the understanding of the world (Eckl and Weber, 2007). Additionally, these adoptions also end up impacting people’s decisions and perceptions of the world. Today, the world appears to be seemingly headed in the same direction with a combined effort in trying to eradicate poverty and diseases like coronavirus. However, the continued use of the phrase North-South divide continues to cast a cloud of doubt over whether any meaningful achievements will be realized in the near future. International cooperation and global governance continue to be increasingly difficult with this division with each side working hard to outdo the other. Whether in environmental matters or trade, each side keeps working towards an ending that will enhance its influence over the other.
One major issue that keeps these two groups engrossed in discussions on end involves human rights. China has been on the receiving end of bashing or criticism for its alleged human rights violations. In his article, Roth (2019) writes that to China, human rights are a threat to its existence. A report by the Human Rights Watch (2018) reveals that human rights defenders continue to suffer at the hand of the Chinese government. Censorship is also a major issue in China with the government firmly in control over what people have access to on the internet. Being a significant part of the South, the above allegations continue to strain the relationship between the two divides.
