Language is complex, but most children master most of the grammar of their native language before they are five years old. Children learn language by taking in different information through their senses of sight and hearing. For example, they will use their ears, mouth, and tongues to mimic the sounds and sights of those around them while trying to create their language. All children master their native languages without being taught the basic rule of grammar by their parents. It is because most parents do not know the rules of their respective native languages. Children across the world acquire language following the same stages. Every infant is born with the ability to perceive and focus on sounds that are important to language, and it is because of this, they learn any language they are exposed to. Their language learning process is innate and standard across all infants.
Stages of Language Development
All children learning to speak, communicate or understand language follows a series of stages while they master their native languages. However, while all children pass through the same stages, the pace along each stage varies. Some are fast while others are slow, but the result is similar (Gervain, 2020). The first language development stage is learning sounds. In this stage, children hear and distinguish sounds. They learn which phonemes belong to their native language and which do not. Children's phonemic awareness advances when they listen and experience the world around them more. The more language they are exposed to, the faster they develop their language mastery (Feldman, 2019). The typical language pattern starts at birth, where these children learn to respond to rhythm, note stress in wording, and rise and fall of the pitch.
