Richard Feynman in “Cargo Cult Science” argues that, “cargo cult science” is the world’s biggest problem. “Cargo Cult” is a term coined by Feynman in reference to the south pacific pre-industrial societies who were desperate to amass cargo (wealth). In the wake of technology, these societies wanted to increase the influx of cargo and opted for fake radio imitations and antenna landing strips. The imitations looked exactly like war activity, but still the cargo never arrived. As such, science that looks like science but is not science is like “cargo cult science” (Feynman) In a fast-growing society and which depends more on data to determine everything, the society must adopt theories and experiments that work. “cargo cult science” according to Feynman referred to any research that yielded results not provable but still reached the public and was accepted because they looked real. Cargo cult lacked the desirable scientific integrity which simply corresponds to all types of honesty.
George Orwell in “politics and the English language” states that the normalization of bad writing is what leads to today’s rampant political oppression. According to Orwell, the distortion of language is a corruption of human civilization and poses greater challenge to the existence of humanity. Orwell argues that most readers buy whatever they read because they hold the believe that language is the ultimate mirror of the society (Orwell).
