Children may have difficulty understanding concepts at present and in the future (Serry et al., 2008). BACKGROUND TO THE CLASSIFICATION OF READING DIFFICULTIES  The Simple View of Reading (SVR) Model. This model comprehensively assesses the ability of the child to process sound patterns and oral language as the building blocks of reading comprehension (Serry et al., 2008).
THE PREDICTIVE VALUE OF ORAL LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • The child’s capacity to understand information or Receptive Language is highly associated with reading comprehension.  The simple view of reading (SVR) assumes that the child interprets the written information the same way as he interprets verbal information (Serry et al., 2008).
  • Word identification is more prognostic to younger kids or those who do not have the skills yet, while listening comprehension is more extrapolative for the older children (Serry et al., 2008). This is because younger kids are less likely to read texts.
  • Interestingly, reading and listening comprehension can only be enhanced when the child is good at word identification (Serry et al., 2008).
