The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to individually summarize and critically evaluate source material for you project.  After the task is completed, you should discover your source material easier to use and organized.

The Task:  For your topic, locate a minimum of six secondary sources from a variety of source types (at least 3 scholarly and two others from credible magazines, newspapers, blogs, etc and one visual text such as Youtube or CNN.com).  Then, to construct the annotated bibliography, follow the below-listed steps and guidelines for each piece of source material:

  1. First, summarize the source, including the source’s thesis, key points, and the most significant detail or evidence supporting those points. Write a brief summary of each source (150-250 words) in your own words!  Include at least one piece of quoted material into the summary and integrate it. Provide appropriate in-text documentation for quoted material.
  2. Second, evaluate the source.
  • Does it make a strong argument? Is it logical? Does the author jump to conclusions? Is it biased? Is it useful compared to other sources?
  • Relate the article to your research/thesis. Can you use it in your essay and how? Does it offer statistics valuable to your research? Has it changed how you think about your topic? Usefulness to your topic?
  1. Correctly format each entry according to MLA works cited standards for that particular source type. (Google Purdue OWL website for MLA format.)     
  2. Include URL link to each source at the end of each citation!
  3. Proofread carefully.

This article addresses the issues of a businessman by the name Simon. He is successful, has a loving family and also his circle of friends is large. However, when Simon is discovered to have a desructive and hostile type of motor neuron disease a condition that causes the nerves in the spines and the brain to continuously and progressively stop functioning. It also hugely shortens life expectancy. When Simon is advised that he has only a few years to live, everything fall apart. “Within weeks of the diagnosis, the disease causes Simon to lose the use of his voice” (British Broadcasting Corporation, p.1). Additionally, when faced with likelihood and probability of rapid physical weakness he notifies the family members that he wants to terminate his life in Switzerland, with the help of a suicide clinic.
This deeply moving and critical issue leaves Simon, family and his friends struggling and tussling with the legal dilemmas, moral and the emotional choices behind his choices. Their contrasting views and aspects reveal fractious and complex questions for Simon. This suggests that his saddening, heartbreaking and depressing decision hangs in the balance until the end. This incident happened at a time when the parliament was debating about the assisted dying bill and Simon’s story examines the complicated and difficult questions that heart of this isolating issues.
