The Hunchback painting was made in the year 1905 by Alexej Jawlensky. Born in German, Alexej used paint to express his views by making human pictures and the landscape paintings of Germany. Jawlensky learned his art of painting in Munich which was a center for several artists that he learned with. After school, he traveled extensively, and his extensive travels in Europe and painting expeditions in Germany had a great impact on the drawing that Alexej did. Under the influence of other artists such as Anders Zorn and Lovis Corinth, he became an expert in the impressionist drawings but later dropped it and started neoimpressionism in his pictures. Also, his style of drawing was influenced by the French artists such as Vincent van Gogh who impacted upon him the ideas of color and light in the paintings.
Jawlensky's drawing technique comprised of a dark blue underdrawing which also served as contour lines which were a key characteristic of the neo-impressionists. To differentiate the different subjects on the paint the underdrawing color was made thin, and the lines were almost entirely covered with paint. Later in the around the 1907 period, he adapted cloisonnism which was considered as an art of mounting color fields in strong contours. This meant that the underdrawing was completely visible and later was reinforced by dark blue brushstrokes at a later stage of the drawing. The underdrawing persisted throughout his sketches by the application of long single brushstrokes with a strongly diluted paint which appeared watery (Knight, 1991).
One of the critical characteristics of the drawings of Jawlensky was the lack of uniformity in his paints. He used bristle brushes of different widths throughout his paintings in representing his two major themes of human face and landscape. He has also applied paint of different thickness and opacity. They often range from thin diluted layers with opaque details and highlights. His paintings often have a hairy texture indicating the features of the brush used in the painting. The mixture of the paint was done on the surface of the board. He also shows consistency in his drawings by the way he uses his brush paints. After adopting the neo-impressionist, Jawlensky became very consistent in his paintings. She became very prevalent in choosing and designing the different directions of the brushstrokes to bring out the difference in the compositional element to show perspective and direction (Knight, 1991).

This painting indicates all the features and techniques as discussed above. In the paint, Jawlensky has employed the dark blue and the light blue color to differentiate the different aspects of the painting. The background is light blue while the rest of the body of the portrait is dark blue and thick color is used.
