TIMELINE
April 1876 – 2016- Sign-stealing is an ongoing issue throughout the MLB.
January 16, 2014-Video review enabled for MLB clubs.
September 22, 2016-Jeff Luhnow receives a PowerPoint presentation from Intern Derek Vigoa outlining “Operation Codebreaker,” which is an illegal form of sign stealing through camera surveillance and signal sending.
December 5, 2016- Astros sign Carlos Beltran from NY Yankees and argue that other clubs are also sign-stealing.
April 3, 2017-“Operation Codebreaker” is put into practice as the Houston Astros begin electronically stealing signs. Most of the team knew or were involved in “Operation Codebreaker,” some more than others.
June 2017: “Operation Codebreaker is altered and “perfected” through stealing of signs and from the defense and warning the Houston Astros batters of off-speed pitches. The Astros would do this by banging on trash cans whenever an off-speed pitch was coming, giving the Houston Astros a massive advantage at the bat, which led to a historic start in the season with a record of 54-27, much better than their competition.
September 15, 2017-Yankees and Red Sox accuse one another of electronic sign stealing, and as a result, they are both fined. In addition, the case prompts the commissioner to enforce punishment for sign stealing.
September 22, 2017: Chicago White Sox’s relieving pitcher Danny Farquhar tells the Atlantic that he noticed a loud noise every time he was about to throw an off-speed pitch. His suspicions become the first recorded account of doubt in the league.
