I agree with the author on why the education system should be changed to encourage collaboration. Punishing students who collaborated to solve a problem albeit unconventionally should be applauded not punished. The author’s arguments are not arbitrary but they highlight deep-seated problem in education that celebrates grades rather than skill acquisition and content retention. It is time Harvard restructured its examining system to ensure it is not punitive of elements that should be nurtured such as teamwork and collaboration.
The goal of the education system shouldn’t to memorize the course content in its entirety and put it down on paper in an exam. Such a system is structured to gauge the content retention of the learners which is a myopic goal for an education system and is bound to fail CITATION Tom14 \l 1033 (Stafford, 2014). Rather, it should be to use that knowledge to solve real world problems. In some cases, the are no real-world problems to be solved by the examiners can structure the exams to make the students critically think. When they are unable to find satisfactory answers to these questions, they should be allowed to collaborate and bring their ideas together to answer the question. Their collective intelligence would help them come up with a satisfactory answer.
Students should not be punished for collaborating to find solutions. As the author points out, ‘Outside Harvard, the students won’t face many situations which they’ll be prohibited from consulting other people.’ That is the exact skill that the job market demands. Thus, they should be encouraged to work in teams and brainstorm ideas and or discuss their ideas to find solutions to problems. The collective intellectual capacity of a group of students is higher than an individual student and an exam setting can help them understand the importance of working together (Hilk, 2013).
