1. What were the reasons for American expansionism at the turn of the twentieth century? What justifications did Americans offer for expansionism?
The American expansionism was caused by the urge of the Americans to have more land and opportunities to create industries. They also wanted to increase their trade activities hence the reason for expanding to other territories. The Americans justified their expansionism by the fact that there were a lot of resources in the world that needed to be used to better the lives of other people. At the moment US claimed to have the necessary powers to exploit such resources because they had a strong economy as compared to the owners of the resources.
2. How did Hawaii become part of the United States?
During the Spanish-American war, there was a need to use the naval base of Pearl Harbor. Given the fact that Hawaii needed protection by the Americans, the Congress approved the annexation of the harbor by the Americans. As a result, Hawaii was made the 5th state of America in the year 1959.
3. Describe the steps leading to America's war with Spain in 1898. Was war justified?
The Cubans and the Philippines had a struggle with the Spanish rule and wanted their independence. In addition, the Americas' imperialism caused them to intervene on behalf of the Cubans. Also, there was an explosion of a US marine ship in Havana Harbor, and all these events made the Americans declare war against the Spanish.
4. What effect did American ownership of the Philippines have on U.S. foreign policy?
The Philippines finally got independence and was declared as an independent nation by the US. This act made other nations relies that the foreign policy of the United States of America was based on personal gains such as the creation of trade allies and a military bases. The ownership made many nations questions about the imperialism of the US. Also, given the fact that the US helped the Philippines overcome the Spanish rule, then it can also be viewed that American foreign policy became more famous and reliable as compared to the earlier situation.
