Thesis Statement: Mona Lisa’s smile does not change; the phenomenon is entirely based on how you look at the painting.
For hundreds of years, the world is looking at Mona Lisa’s painting and wondering why Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece conveys different messages all the time. Sometimes she is seen smiling, and the very next moment, the smile fades. How did the painter manage to capture her mysterious expressions? In Italy, a term used to explain Mona’s smile is “sfumato,” which means imaginary and ambiguous feelings. According to Erik Levi, Mona Lisa’s smile does not appear and disappear; the fact is that we look at the portrait from varying perspectives (Levi, 2002).
Some people may view the painting when they are happy and satisfied internally, and thus, they find her smiling, and some people may observe that the smile has gone, but it is not so.
