Since time immemorial, animals kept in the zoos tend to take a quite long time before adapting to their new environment. For example female Asiatic elephant that was rescued in the field after all the other herds had been killed by poachers, underwent behavioral change upon introduction to the zoo. The first three weeks was traumatizing, the female elephant exhibited the behavior of being unfriendly to humans and remained isolated at the furthest corner of the zoo hiding behind small tree. When there were few people in the zoo, the elephant kept moving round the zoo while swinging the trunk, occasionally trumpet and lifting of front legs. But after two months, she got used to the environment and even visitor could move closer, feed with hands, touches the trunk and tusks.
Smell
I had the opportunity to observe the behavior of this female Asiatic elephant for the duration she was kept in the zoo. Some of the behaviors were developed there at the zoo while the obvious character known to elephants such as lifting the trunk and pointing it towards the direction of the wind to sense through smell was instinct and hereditary since this behavior is observable even in wild elephants.
