Language is a key aspect of culture. Eroding a people’s language leads to the loss of their culture. In a majority of African countries, colonialism led to the loss and death of some native languages, and the erosion continues today. A majority of African countries have officially adopted their colonial masters’ languages, and this suffocates the native languages. For example, in Kenya, there are more than 40 tribes in the country, with Swahili being the national and official language of the country. However, English is also considered an official language and is among the key languages taught in school. Where is the place for native languages? Should they be taught in schools as well, or should they be replaced by a language that is less than 200 years old in the country? It is crucial to ask such questions as authors like Svartik and Leech (2006) appear to champion English as the global language. The authors rightfully indicate that there is a need for the world to have a universal language, especially as technology continues to bridge geographical gaps. However, such an idea should not overshadow or dominate the local native languages. These are the bearers of the history, culture, and genesis of all communities of the world. In as much as English has been widely accepted as a global language, there needs to be a way to preserve such endangered histories.
At one time, English was considered a vernacular language, but during the renaissance, together with Spanish, French, and Italian languages, they became mainstream languages (Svartik & Leech, 2006).
