Retired CIA Officer, and Author of The Widow Spy, Martha Peterson –will talk about her career as a CIA officer and her story as a spy in Moscow in the 70s and 80s, being captured by the KGB and subsequently released. Peterson was one of the first women to be assigned to Moscow, a very difficult operational environment. Her story begins in Laos during the Vietnam War where she accompanied her husband, a CIA officer. She describes their life in a small city in Laos, ending with the tragic death of her husband. Then her own thirty-year CIA career begins in Moscow, where she walks the dark streets alone, placing dead-drops and escaping the relentless eye of the KGB. She relates her arrest and detention in Lyubianka Prison as only she can relate it. What she reveals in The Widow Spy has never been told.

Martha Peterson spent her thirty-year career as an officer in the Central Intelligence Agency retiring to Wilmington in 2003. This was after she earned the agency the Donavan Award and George H.W bush awards for excellence in counterterrorism. Her story is vividly revealed in a book, “The Window Spy”. Martha began her professional service as a CIA officer in Moscow, during the cold war era (Peterson, 2012). After attaining her master’s in teaching from the UNC-Chapel, Martha married a fellow student, John Peterson in 1967. After their marriage, the couple moved to Laos, Vietnam. In 1971, her husband joined the CIA and served as a paramilitary officer working with the local anti-communist Lao Forces. Her contribution to the country began in Pakse, Laos, during the Vietnam War. During this time, Martha worked as a clerical officer in the Laotian city. Her husband died later in a helicopter crash in 1975, and Martha returned to the U.S and entered a CIA career training program. Her main mission was to act as an agent with a Russian code-named TRIGON. Martha was later arrested by the KGB after the Soviet Foreign Ministry was betrayed, and detained in the infamous Lyubianka Prison for questionings (Patterson & Koegel, 2013).
Martha Peterson moved to Moscow to be TRIGON’s handler, where she retained contact with Soviet Foreign Ministry Official while working as a complete case officer. She was one of the first female CIA officers to serve behind the Iron Curtain. During the cold war, the streets of Moscow were the most dangerous battlefields of the cold war, winters were cold and the nights were long. Few goods were available in the stores.
