Care and Justice
Introduction
Care is a term that is generally used to describe the act of giving or providing for, to establish either a permanent or a temporary solution or relief to the needy person or situation. Justice, on the other hand, is the act of responding towards an inequality or a misdeed between the accuser and the perpetrator. Both justice and care are moral and important life virtues and perspectives meant to maintain social balance in a society, without which there would be much difficulty in the societal coexistence. These moral values are built by a proper description of other distinct 'sub-virtues' such as personal choice or decision making, personal definition of respect and fairness, and also matters of consideration, initiative, and level of ignorance in a person. The "care" perspective is more attached to a person's emotions than the "justice" perspective, In the sense that it involves individual or communal relationships and being mindful of others' welfare and needs. The virtue of justice is majorly based on equality for all persons in the same region or society, with negligible regard to the emotional status but with high dependence on logic, or common sense, and that which is controlled by the law, which dictates and upholds necessary response to inequality. Besides, both perspectives revolve around thinking (philosophy) which involves choice or decision making.
Responses in Care Perspective
Responses to both care and justice are usually the actions taken by a concerned individual in improving, restoring order or rehabilitating the affected individual, casualty or victim of circumstances through care or eliminating the victim’s problem that may be something or someone through justice. Care is significantly more preferred virtue in most challenging situations. A brief example is a situation in times of war which is a key proponent for the massive destruction of property and loss of lives, after which there is usually recovery, a process that requires care preferably more than justice. Care is more needed than justice in this example, where less or non-affected individuals attempt to restore wellness in victims of war, leading to recovery and re-establishment of social, physical and economic stability of the victims after the war. Otherwise, if a care perspective was considered first before embarking on war, there would be minimal or no destruction of life or property. The perspective of care is less discriminative of a person's status that includes health status, age, gender, race or ethnicity, and occupation, as it manifests in most health settings where everyone receives the healthcare they need, alongside other social settings where people seek services (Juujärvi, Ronkainen & Silvennoinen, 2019).
