Module 3 Case IT Project Roles, Responsibilities, and Staffing

Essay Instructions:

Assignment Overview
This Module's Case is about how to develop a successful project team. The core of the case is a description of an actual team development situation:
Poole, C. (2003, March 26). Three week project turnaround. Retrieved from http://www(dot)charliepoole(dot)org/article.php?p=turnaround
XProgramming.com. (2011). What is extreme programming? Retrieved from http://xprogramming(dot)com/xpmag/whatisxp
Flynn, A., & Mangione, T. (2011). Five steps to a winning project team. Retrieved from http://www(dot)projectsmart(dot)co(dot)uk/five-steps-to-a-winning-project-team.html
And then there are pieces of "practice wisdom" on the team development process, such as:
Sherrer, A. (2011, May 31). Six characteristic stages of team development. The Project Management Hut. Retrieved from http://www(dot)pmhut(dot)com/six-characteristic-stages-of-team-development.
Webster, M.. (2011, June 13). Six 5 tips to motivate your project team. The Project Management Hut. Retrieved from http://www(dot)pmhut(dot)com/5-tips-to-motivate-your-project-team.
Overall, it seems as though we know a lot about how to create and deploy successful project teams. So why is there such frustration and so many reported failures?
As noted earlier, you should also consult material from the Background Information or related other materials you find yourself (be sure to reference properly whatever specific sources you draw on). You may want to do some further searching in the project management support websites.
Case Assignment
When you've read through the articles and related material, scanned the websites, and thought about it carefully, please prepare a short (4-5 page) paper discussing the question:
"Discuss how IT manager could create and maintain a successful and winning project team"
You should probably be prepared to address issues such as the definition of "success," costs and benefits involved, and who either receives or pays them, sources of pressure on the team and its management, and responsibilities incurred by the various participants.
Assignment Expectations
Your paper should be short (4-6 pages, not including cover sheet and references) and to the point. It is to be structured in the following manner.
You are expected to:
Begin this paper by stating your position on this question of managerial practices, clearly and concisely
Citing appropriate sources, present the reasons why you take this position. Be sure to make the most effective case you can. Use the Poole case fol illustrations where possible.
Then present the best evidence you can, again citing appropriate sources, against your position—that is, establish what counterarguments can be made to your original position.
Finally, review your original position in light of the counterarguments, showing how they are inadequate to rebut your original statement.
By the end of your paper, you should be able to unequivocally re-affirm your original position.
You will be particularly assessed on:
Your ability to see what the module is all about and to structure your paper accordingly.
Your informed commentary and analysis—simply repeating what your sources say does not constitute an adequate paper.
Your ability to apply the professional language and terminology of communications and information systems correctly and in context; you are expected to be familiar with this language and use it appropriately.
Your effective and appropriate use of in-text citations to the assigned readings and other source material to support your arguments. Refer to the Purdue University APA formatting and style guide (see required readings) for the proper formats.

Creating a Winning Team
Information Technology implementation is an essential tool that helps managers maintain high standards of work in their organizations. It solves problems in complex working environments and the competitions that other companies pose in similar practices. Efficient team management is essential in realizing the success of most firms (Sherrer, 2011). In managing a team, the collaboration between workers will be visible to every person in the company or outside. Results of hard work will be visible. Information Technology managers use these aspects of management to form a good team that focuses on managing their projects and businesses (Poole, 2003). Here is an elaboration of how IT managers work to establish a team and the supervision of their competencies in the workplace towards the company’s goals.
The first step in developing a project team is the acquisition of the right skills. Human resource is the most important purchase for every organization. Employees should have the ability to collaborate with each other in the workplace. Their skills should match the requirements of the organization and promise the achievement of the goals. Requirements that organization will have include education in the right fields (Flynn & Mangione, 2011). For an IT company, a manager must look for the students who have knowledge of programming and computer sciences. Knowledge and skills of the workers should allow them to work and adjust in the workplace comfortably. The moment an organization has the people to work; it is possible to start working in their firm.
Flynn and Mangione (2011) and Webster (2011) offer their ideas that after establishing a team, managers must understand the roadmap of the goals their organizations have. Information Technology may be part of a larger company or a self-standing service provision in the current business world. Uses of IT in large corporations may be for communication and information storage. If an IT manager understands these issues, he should have a strategy to allow completion of work and achievement of organizational goals (Webster, 2011). Having cognition of the kind of work one must do sets a stage for the right working conditions so that people can work. This stage requires experienced management to work on and produce the results that will match the organization’s goals, as Flynn and Mangione (2011) agree. A delegation of roles in an organization is important at this stage as it gives people the right sections of where to work.
During the work, IT managers should be able to judge who is working well, where there are needs for improvement and the achievements of the organization. The performance of an organization is the first issues that will help identify the organizations working ability and make room for improvements (Poole, 2003). A team should assist in determining how to make changes in their organizations. Most teams work with a chain or network. With proper management, it is easy to monitor the areas that lag behind the rest and establish what an organization can do to make their work better (Sherrer, 2011). In doing so, a systematic fashion of working on t...
