Structured Query Language (SQL) is a set of instructions used in relational databases to undertake a number of operations (Rouse, 2016). The programming language was established during the 1970s and is used to define data, data relations and perform various queries among other operations (Scott, 2010). The primary functions of SQL are inserting data into the database, updating the data, and deleting chunks (rows) of the data from the database (Microsoft, 2016).
Learning SQL in the course has helped me hone my skills and understanding of the database management systems. SQL is an integral part of database systems and it is essential that IT professionals such as database administrators and data analysts learn the language so that they can enhance their skills in the structure and development of databases and querying to fetch relevant information for decision making purposes respectively (Plew & Stephens, 2002). I enjoyed defining a database structure, populating it and writing SQL statements to query various aspects of the data.
