The American civil war was the first of the great modern wars. The war is considered as the first modern war because of the modern war technologies involving use of rifles, railroads to transport weaponry and large armies as well as use of the Prisoners of War (POW) camps and diseases.
The American civil war took place after the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution brought about the use of rifles by both warring sides of the war.
