Young Gifted and Black
Young Gifted and black is a book reflecting on the African-American profile achievements. Gap in achievement is evident in blacks and this has created the necessity for analysis by a scholars and educators. Disparities in achievements have been evidenced especially in the scores of assessments, patterns of course enrollment and the resources allocation. Disparities in the achievement of African American students have been attributed by numerous challenges (Berry, 2004). African American students have been associated with pride, low achievements and poor aspirations. Most of the students have been expelled from schools on the bases of differential patterns, tracking practices, poor achievements and curriculum inequities.
The stereotype threat has affected me on various occasions. This has lowered my grades significantly. This is because of the many prejudice in class which make me lose my concentration. With the help of my parents and school administrators, I have managed to overcome the challenge amicably. African American students are identified with negative attitudes and in the wrong side of the law.
The widening disconnects between the desire to learn and read is identified with uneven social identities, namely; membership in a caste-like group, mainstream society membership and cultural group membership. This gap can be closed by the American society embracing multiculturalism (Berry, 2004). In my opinion, all people should be given equal opportunities in life, but this is not the case especially in America. This attitude can avert the negative perspectives by the whites towards the blacks. The drum major instinct book by Martin Luther King Junior encouraged people to seek greatness through love and service. This can be related well by analyzing how individuals overcome their ego, and starts to perceive others as brothers and sisters. Martin Luther King Junior king was a Methodist preacher .Through the emphasis of doing right with love, we can easily relate to the Young Gifted and Black in that the attitude by the whites is causing disintegration. People should learn to appreciate one another, regardless of the skin color and economic might, since it is the only way America can be able to attain its dream. Fundamental changes in life ought to be done and all the American’s children should be given equal opportunities in life.
