Both had a passion to liberate the Negro, "black community" from the discrimination that they were subjected to for many years. They were African-American leaders who settled for nothing but to ensure that the country`s racial injustices were dealt with. Martin Luther was particularly a revolutinist and a preacher who used non violent and civil disobedience tactics that led to the changing of laws in the American constitution. These changes ended the segragation of the blacks from the whites. The current president of America, Barrack Obama symbolised the dream that Martin Luther King junior had. Martin Luther King dreamt of a black American president. Barrack Obama fulfilled that dream and became the first African-American , black president that the country has ever had. This essay compares and contrasts two speeches from the two heros, Martin Luther King, Jr.`s "I Have a Dream" and Barack Obama`s "A More Perfect Union.". Comparison Both Barrack Obama and Martin Luther`s speeches had some common similarities. They addressed about race, politics and civil rights in America. Martin Luther King was destined and determined to lead his people "negros" and the American nation from racial oppression and segragation to justice and freedom (Echols 1). King addressed the oppression and discrimination that the blacks were subjected to in his speech. "....But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination......". Dr. King had a dream that one day, both the black and the white people would be guaranteed equal civil rights. In his speech he said that no American would be judged by the colour of their skin but they would be judged by the content of their character. President Obama on the other hand highlighted the slavery that the black people endured. In his campaign speech, he pleaded with the American citizens to work in unity so that the blacks can be delivered from the chains of slavery bondage. Both leaders made endless efforts to make America a better nation for the forth coming generations. This was clearly stated in their speech.
