The United States is the undisputed world superpower; and has used both its military, economic, and leadership prowess to assert its authority worldwide. The policies exercised by the US have aided in several important interventions, some which were not successful. However, it is imperative to understand these interventions, which policies influenced them and the outcome from these interventions.
Policies and perceived interventions
In the year 2011, Barack Obama, the then US president conducted an operation, which resulted in the killing of a long time terrorist, Osama Bin Laden. He was the leader of a terror group called Al Qaeda, and was responsible for the September 1998 attack on the world Trade Center in New York (Sopko, 2013). This was in line with the Bush doctrine to use military might whenever the US citizens or its interests feels threatened. In the last five years, the United States has tried to implement the Marshall Plan of spreading liberty in the world, by taking a passive role towards the recovery of Syria. Since the attempted revolution of 2011, the country has been at war from government and opposition leaders. Initially, the US government provided $400 million in non-lethal support to the Syrian opposition (State.gov, 2015). However, the Islamic State terrorist group emerged later, causing Russia, America, France, and Iraq to be involved in destroying the militia. The US government is therefore involved actively, through diplomacy and militarily to aid the Syrian government overcomes the terrorism crisis.
Factors fueling US rise to become a superpower
Several factors contributed to the United States rise to a super power status. In 1898, the US got embroiled in a war with Spain, where the latter’s ships were destroyed near Cuban port of Santiago (Efthymiou, 2013). Additionally, the US quenched the rising of the Guam and Philippines, enabling it to build a strong naval base and prove to the world that it can protect its waters. Additionally, these actions received massive support from the public and the congress. According to Aydinli and Rosenau (2005), the strong economic position together with its neutral position it took during the Second World War enabled US to become a superpower. Most world economies had suffered heavy losses from the war. On the contrary, the US economy had just recovered from the Great Depression, which saw the government invests massively in the military in 1940 (Aydinli & Rosenau, 2005). The strong economy, high population, and strong military power fueled its expansion to world super power.
Additionally, there was great ideological and technological development in America, which spurred both industrial and economic growth. The wealthy individuals invested in research, expansion of their firms, building of educational institutions and economy of scale (Efthymiou, 2013).
