Culture is a particular form of advancement, especially the customs, beliefs, arts, and groups as a society in a given time, as well as a compass for what is acceptable, wrong, or recommended (N’dri, 2016). For a number of reasons, culture is very important because it affects a person in a variety of ways, including views, values, fears, desires, and worries. In addition to that, belonging to a culture provides people with a sense of belonging, purpose, and identity, and most cultures have been sustained for many years in fact thousands of years to help connect individuals, and communities. Culture exists in a family in a very unique way whereby the family forms itself in terms of beliefs, roles, activities, and habits. Culture also offers an opportunity to share, and connect one’s beliefs, and history such as origin, family background, and tradition. This paper assesses family’s culture, ethical traits, and the family’s level of developmental competency.
Description of Movie Family
Hotel Rwanda is an American historical drama movie that was released in the year 2004 based on the Rwandan genocide. The drama film was directed by Terry George, which was adapted from a script that was written by both Keir Pearson and George with stars such as Don Cheadle as hotelier Paul Rusesabagina, and Sophie okonedo as his wife Tatiana (Anthere, 2005). The Rwandan genocide, which happened during the spring of 1994, is documented in the film by showing Rusesabagina’s acts of saving the lives of his family members and a thousand refugees by offering them shelter in the surrounded Hotel des Mille Collines (Sragow,  2005). The movie explores the political corruption, genocide, and the outcome of violence that was sparked by civil war as a result of ethnic tension, and recurrent violence that occurred in Rwanda following Rwanda’s independence. The drama film also documents ethical issues, and family values that played a role in this context of family culture, and functional competence.
Hotel Rwanda is a drama film, which portrays a hero who fought the genocide. Ethnic tensions between the Tutsi and Hutu people leads to civil war in Rwanda where political corruption is a practice. Rusesabagina the manager of the Belgium hotel is a Hutu while his wife Tatiana is a Tutsi. His marriage is a source of conflict with Hutu fanatics especially Georges, a friend who supplies goods to the hotel, and a leader of a cruel Hutu militia. The political condition in Rwanda worsened following the fall of the president, and Paul with his family witness how the neighbors are being killed by the ethnic violence (Sragow, 2005). During the early stages of the genocide, Paul does favor with individuals of influence by bribing them with money, and alcohol just to keep his family safe. When civil war sparks, and the Rwandan army is threatening Paul, and his neighbors, he narrowly negotiates, and brings them to the hotel. Paul must distract the Hutu Rebels, take care of the refugees, and be a source of courage to his family.
