When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking.
The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
For Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, reviewed the Procon.org Website in order to gather information, and engaged in prewriting to examine your thoughts.
* Remember that in the Week 2 Discussion, you examined the biases discussed in Chapter 2 of the webtext.
In Part II of the assignment (due Week 4), you will write a paper to synthesize your ideas.
Part II – Writing
Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
1. State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1.
2. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position and explain why you selected these specific reasons.
3. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website.
4. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position. 
5. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases.
6. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same.
The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

McCoy Strayer University PHI210 Christopher Emerick October 16, 2016 Loading...Gay Marriage 2 My Position on gay marriage is that I don’t believe that a person's sexual preference should have any bearings on law and tradition in that aspect. True, the 14th amendment did address citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, but it was originally proposed to address the issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War. If the LGBT community did not fight the issue of marriage, then they would probably not have had problems getting their other issues addressed such as protection and benefits as homosexual couples. Marriages was originally an institution bonded under God. This is where religion comes into the picture. I believe the 1st Amendment covers that. The LGBT community is forcing everyone to accept their lifestyle and legalize it against tradition and law. Pro: Denying some people the option to marry is discriminatory and creates a second class of citizens. A. What's interesting or helpful about this view? It's interesting that the ban on gay marriage was viewed as unconstitutional. Why would the LGBT community seek to change the constitution due to their sexual preference? I find it interesting that they would see the ban on gay marriage as hurtful and discriminatory and seek to reconstruct the law to serve their own personal preferences. Why do the laws that were previously enacted for years have to be tailor made because they want benefits and dignity? Loading...Gay Marriage B. What would I notice if I believed this view? 3 I would notice that there is a lot of bias involved in the acceptance of anything that deviates from the norm and challenges the majority to conform from what was formally established as tradition and law. C. In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true? I would see it from my personal view as an African American. As an African American in 2016 and even in earlier years, I feel that our race has been denied some of the same freedoms as other races. This is similar to the type of discrimination the LGBT community faces. In conclusion, I would say I've paid a lot more attention to how our laws work for and against us in different venues. I've also learned that there's a fine line between bias and truth when determining if, how or when these laws should be reconstructed, although I maintain my position on the subject of gay marriage.

Introduction
In the wake of the fight for human rights and freedoms, the American society gained some of the most significant steps towards civilization. With the practices that were rampant in the 19th century, African Americans among other minorities had been subjected to some very inhumane acts. Today the civil rights and freedoms of every other person are protected from the vile acts of the days of slavery. However, in the 21st century the fight for human rights has taken a turn for the worst. This is with reference to the fight for the recognition of the gay and lesbian sexual orientation.
Gay Rights
In the recent developments, the LGBT community has been fighting for the recognition of their sexual orientation, with some of the moves taking on an aggressive stunt. What is more interesting is the fact that they have been pushing for the development of policies that recognize even their unions. This means that they would want to have their marriage unions recognized in the law. Aspect of such magnitude can only be done, through changes in the constitution. Some of the debates have cited the fourth amendment ("10 Reasons Why Homosexual “Marriage” is Harmful and Must be Opposed", 2016). This is an aspect that is quite confusing for the rest of the population relative to the fact that, the fourth amendment is tied to the rights established to protect all the citizens and with specific reference to the liberties that were taken away during the slavery period. To make sure that such element did not again face the American society, the amendment was established (Burnett, 2016). The use of the same in the fight for recognition of sexual orientation simply beats the point and dilutes the essence of the amendment relative to the American history (Weisert, 2016). The country went through a dark past to come to the point where it would amend the constitution to safeguard against some of the atrocities that took place in the history of the nation. Using such amendments and constitutional provisions to settle sexual orientation fights beats the logic for the historical significance of such development.
The gay community is simply forcing their agenda on the rest of the community. For starters, it is important to note that, the society is largely heterosexual. There is a reason that the reproduction mechanisms in nature involve the engagement of a male and female (Burnett, 2016). This is relative to the fact that, even nature supports the element of male and female and the issue of reproduction and continuity of a species. Having a male and a male relationship defeats the element of reproduction and the natural order (Cline, 2016).
