The film ‘Arguing the World’ written, produced and directed by Joseph Dorman in 1997 traces the lives and careers of four Jewish intellectuals from New York in the 20th century. It highlights the political and social ideologies of scholars Irving Kristol, Irving Howe, Daniel Bell and Nathan Glazer illustrating their views by self-narrations, critics and other philosophers. The movie engages and challenges its viewers intellectually by covering the justifications and reasoning about some societal elements and views of how political, economic and social views can change our perception about the world. The film develops with the characters’ progress through the political arenas highlighting how the scholars shifted their stands and views with time. as they move from the liberalism and communism and alternating between the political left and right, the film shifts the viewers focus on how the history and the prevailing political and industrial environment can alter the governance or the appropriateness of the forms of leadership. As the film covers their effect on American politics and how the New York 20th century environment affected the scholars’ ideas as seen through their publications and arguments.
