Myth is interpreted in different views in a philosophical, social, cultural, and psychological sense. Myths, with the way they are formed, influences the way of life of human beings. With the advancement of technology as well as with intellectualism, a myth has been intensified along with the tragic vision of man. The evolution of myths can be attributed to how men cope and adapt to the constant changes in the environment. This ever-changing process is depicted in different forms of narratives.
Produced by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror is a Netflix series that consists of different episodes that depict a dystopian society of the present time. Each episode tackles various kinds of vision of technological dystopia wherein characters are obsessed with a particular technology or in a dysfunctional relationship. The episodes also offer technological myths that could be proven shortly (Singh).
In the entire history of your episode of Black Mirror (S01E03), the plot revolves around a society that utilizes a device that is implanted within their bodies. This “grain” device records every image and movements seen by the eyes of the user and automatically saves it so that it can be viewed in a later time, acting like a digital memory where one can browse, replay and rewind anytime. Through this device, things hidden were discovered that drove the character’s life into a mess, driving him into the insanity that resulted in the act of cutting the implant out. In this episode, it showed how far the boundaries of technology can go and to give awareness to the modern society about the potential risk of the advancement of technology. Technology is a very useful tool in our everyday lives, however, one should take precautions of how it will influence future societal dynamics (Sidhu).
Another haunting vision of future technology is depicted in another episode of Black Mirror Be right back. After losing her partner, Martha started using a technology that mimics every movement and personality of Ash. To help her recover from her grief, she focuses her attention on this full-body hardware imitation of her partner which offers some sort of comfort in dealing with her loss. This episode shows the confrontation of humanity’s obsession with technology as a psychological cure for someone undergoing grief.
