This discussion diverges slightly from the previous ones, as it is meant to prepare you for your final writing assignment by requiring that you focus on the primary sources and place them within their proper historical context. Consider this work to be more like a short paper assignment. You do not need to respond to other students for this assignment.
Answer the following question in at least 600 words.
Based on the course readings, evaluate what the American Revolution meant to at least three different people and whether or not it was, in your estimation, a radical event. To answer this prompt, choose at least three primary documents. You will want to examine them to determine how different people (including, for instance, colonial politicians, farmers, slaves, women, male revolutionaries, monarchists, etc.) from the period perceived the Revolution and its meaning. What were their concerns, experiences, values, and biases? Your answer needs to show a clear understanding of how each of these perspectives fit within their political and social context by using the textbook, videos, and other readings to understand from where each voice was coming.
A successful assignment requires you to analyze the primary documents and meet the following expectations:
Use at least three of the primary documents from this unit.
Develop your argument by providing a thesis statement, evidence to support it, and a clear statement of the significance of this topic and your position (that is, why it matters).
Analyze each primary source by considering its historical context, its author (including his or her values, biases, and experiences), and the rhetoric of the text.
Utilize the secondary sources (textbook, videos, etc.) to place each primary document in historical context.
Be sure to organize your response around a thesis, with logical paragraph development, and with proper grammar and spelling.

For male revolutionaries such as John Adams and Thomas Paine, the latter who was a journalist, it meant freedom from pretenses of the British rule on its colonies as well as affirmations of America’s actual intentions, which was commerce, not defiance from other governments or powers. In a Magazine, ‘Common Sense,’ coined by Thomas Paine, he encouraged independence and challenged the supposed protection by Great Britain, claiming that it was borne out of self-interest and nothing more. He motivated all those who dared to defy their oppression to be brave and stand forth. I believe that those in places of power should use their influence for the greater good, as Thomas Paine did.
Those who have experienced privilege and benefited from it fail to recognize its downsides to those not capable of obtaining such privilege. The American Revolution for colonial politicians meant the surrender of power. The victory of Great Britain in the war involving the French and the Indians was equally beneficial to America. The latter was free from the hostile troops and were encouraged to resist new colonial policies by the British that involved inequalities of individual freedoms and political rights. Declarations of the Stamp Act Congress evidenced this in 1765, which blatantly protested new tax measures advocated by the British Parliament and challenged parliamentary authority over the colonies. Moreover, the failure of the redcoats in 1777 under the leadership of John Burgoyne was advantageous to Americans as this showed the weakness of the British army necessitated the French to ally with the Americans ...
