Introduction.
Living in the 1880s as an immigrant from China to America, I believe it was not all milk and honey as people thought. This notion and thought is based on the stories I learned from friends who believed that the United States of America was a land of economic opportunities (Library of Congress, 2020). If I was an immigrant at the time, I know that there were a lot of challenges that I would have faced physically, mentally, and socially. These challenges probably would have stemmed from the fact that most people who believed to be natives needed to constantly be in charge of immigrants because their parents did not participate in the American Revolution. Therefore, the natives living in America at the time wanted the best opportunities to be given to them first, and whatever was left be handled by the immigrants.
Most Chinese and European immigrants came immensely into the United States of America after the American Civil War. Slavery was already abolished in every part of this rising nation. This period was during the rebuilding and radical expansion of the country’s economic status (Library of Congress, 2020). For most of the immigrants at the time, this was a good economic opportunity to come and assist in this rebuilding exercise while earning good income from it.
I believe that job competition was one of the major challenges in the U.S. during this period, and I think that I would have been tormented physically by the natives. This is because I know that I would have engaged in several fights and beatings with most natives of European descent on several occasions. These fights with the commoners took place in the streets, in bars, and several alleys at night and, in most cases, would have resulted in physical injuries and mental disorientation. Before the American Revolution in the previous century, the European-Americans who came to this country often resulted in chaos and conflicts because they believed that the immigrants came to steal their jobs.
