Thesis Statement: During the Twentieth century the roles of women in the United States evolved tremendously. Each decade had its own set of challenges in the fight for equal rights. This paper will explore the 20th century feminist rights movements and significant contributions by women during this time.

This is a peer reviewed article that examines the changes in women’s rolls from 1950-2010. The research was conducted by reviewing public opinion polls from the early 1900s to 2010. The results of this study concluded that the stereotype of competence in the workforce improved over time, where personality differences and perception of women’s personality in the work place did not change. This article is strong because it has concrete statistical data to prove that their has been a historical change in mindset of women’s roles in most of the 20th century. There is missing data from the 1930’s 5o 1950, that data has been omitted and that may be a period of the largest changes to women’s rights and roles.

This article is very lengthy and examines the roles of women and the changes of the American family. It is interesting to read how rapidly things changed from 1920 on. This article has changes outlined by decade and is easy to read. Although it does have a lot of information on the changes of roles of women, it’s primary focus is on the decline of marriage and increase in divorce.
3. University of Massachusetts Amherst. (2017). Introduction to women, gender, & sexuality studies.
This book is actually an e-book/ text book for a women’s studies course and it is broken down into units. It goes into great depth discussing social construction and the role of women, many different feminist rights groups and movements. It talks about women’s stereotypes and an idea of “global sisterhood”. This book has a lot of information that is relevant to my paper, and notes women who were instrumental in the changes of women’s right in the 20th century. This book is not specific to the United States.

Evolution of the American Woman During the 20th Century.
At the beginning of the 20th century, women were marked as secondary citizens due to the wide range of discrimination directed towards them. American women were not allowed to vote, hold offices, serve injuries, mass media, popular cultures, professions, and labor force participation (Corda, 2015). In the previous decades, women and other minority groups had faced several challenges in the fight for equal rights. Therefore, several feminist activist groups emerged and advocated for change in women's status in the political, professional, and family roles. During the 20th century, American women were able to drastically move into the various aspects of life and acquired different roles in society. Even though there was a tremendous change that allowed women to engage in the multiple facets of life and functions, their participation did not equate to men in America (Corda, 2015). Ultimately, this paper will explore the various significant contributions of women and the feminist rights movement during the 20th century.
In the 20th century, the societal, professional, and family roles of women changed in America. According to Eagly et al. (2020), there was a dramatic change in women's societal roles in America during the mid of the 20th century. Similar to men, women were able to take on other roles besides domestic responsibilities. Women were able to join the paid labor force in large numbers with the same rights, duties, and roles as men (Eagly et al., 2020). In the 20th century, many women flooded educational institutions to acquire higher education and took on prestigious men-dominated occupations.
Additionally, in the twentieth century, the participation of women in significant fields such as medicine, law, social works, and engineering increased in number. Furthermore, families in the 20th century allowed their female children to join family businesses, unlike in the early decades when female children were left home to engage in household chores (Ruggles, 2015). Women were also able to contribute to their families' household income since they were able to join the paid workforce. In the early times, men were responsible for the welfare of families, but in the 20th-century, women took up or contributed to the wellbeing of their families (Ruggles, 2015).
Feminist rights movements contributed to the change in gender equality by creating awareness and suppressing the patriarchic stigma faced by women in various societies during the 20th century. In the earlier times, women were regarded as weak, irrational, and emotional, making men in communities always suppress their rights.
