Spiritual Considerations During a Disaster

Disasters can be due to an unexpected natural or man-made phenomenon. These initiate grave threats to society by causing devastation of the environment, leading to a shortage of supplies, failure of economic functioning, increase susceptibility to diseases and injuries, or worse, death. Disasters can be classified into natural, which is the consequence of an environmental disturbance or danger that surpasses the ability of the society to adjust, and man-made or anthropogenic disasters, which is caused by human actions. Both types can trigger damaging effects on health care and cause a health disaster which is secondary to catastrophes that lead to tremendous numbers of casualties (Veenema, 2018).
During the time of catastrophes, the beliefs of many, if not all, of the people are turned to questioning. This prompts the respondents to holistically assess the situation and approach it while considering the people’s personal and spiritual beliefs (Wu, Tseng, Liao, 2016).
Spiritual attention involves everything that supports the individual, family or the neighborhood in gaining strength, faith, and recuperation after a disaster since this phenomenon can change a person’s perspective instantaneously (Boschman, 2011).
Spiritual considerations for the victims include personal, emotional, and spiritual beliefs. The following are included in the spiritual considerations: 1) Stress assessment and management; 2) Emergency and suicide screening, assessment, and management; 3) Spiritual care evaluation to better entrust each person to the proper teams; 4) Psychological evaluation to take care of the victims’ mental health; 5) Interdisciplinary faith assessment; 6) Gravity of losses including the number of deaths, lost possessions, and livelihood to have a better approach on death reports; 7) The need for sacramental ministry; and 8) The need for grief support (Bo...
