Obesity among children has risen dramatically in the recent past. Studies show that an average of 23% of children in developed countries and about 13% in developing countries are overweight or obese. Low levels of physical activity have been termed as being a significant contributor to the increasing numbers of obese children. In a move aimed at increasing physical activity among children, most countries are implementing initiatives aimed at stimulating the participation in physical activities. Many interrelated determinants such as social and physical environment affect the participation in physical activities in children, and this makes it difficult to develop a clear solution for obesity control among children. However, dietary habits are an equal major contributor in the acceleration of obesity rates among children (Frieden, Dietz & Collins, 2010). As such, it is vital that policies that deal with nutrition among children are developed to inhibit the increasing cases of obesity. Seeing that a majority of children affected by obesity are of school going age, the school environment provides an excellent platform for the provision of information on the causes of obesity and prevention measures. Consequently, this essay examines the use of existing education systems as a conduit through which children will learn more about the need to maintain proper dietary habits in reducing obesity.
The proposed policy involves requiring schools to implement healthy eating habits within the school environment. This program will include education of the faculty, the students, and the parents, as they are all primary stakeholders who need to be involved in the implementation of the policy if it is to be successful. Additionally, lawmakers will also be educated on the importance of healthy dietary habits in the prevention and management of obesity among school going children.
