How to Administer Learning Needs Assessment to Students
For active learning and understanding by nursing students, a proper learning needs assessment should be conducted by the educator before the commencement of the program. The needs assessment will be an ideal tool for the educator to get more insights into the needs of the students. For the proper administration of learning needs assessment, the educator needs to have an idea of the cognitive, social, and emotional abilities of students. This consideration will help to establish the extent of the information that students can comprehend (Hofmeyer et al., 2018). Hence, the educator will be able to know from where to begin with the assessment and which areas to cover. Determining the channel of administration of the needs assessment goes hand in hand with the learning style of the students (Bastable, 2017). This idea will enable the educator to select appropriate instruction methods and materials to use (Bastable, 2017). In this regard, there are various techniques of data collection that the educator could use to get more information about his or her class.
Conducting Interviews
When using this technique, the educator aims at getting an audience that will provide more information about the learning needs and by probing them to give detailed feedback (Evans‐Agnew et al., 2017). The method will enable the educator to obtain in-depth information on the learning needs of the students as well as obtain ideas on how to counter scenarios that may arise in the course of the program. Interviewing will result in a collaborative learning program since interviewees will give input on how to restructure the program.
Use of Questionnaires
Questionnaires are paramount when the educator wants to obtain specific information from a broad audience. The results are always straight to the point and give the educator the expected answers. For extensive coverage, the educator will have to use many avenues to send out the questionnaires (Evans‐Agnew et al., 2017). For instance, he or she can use emails to pass the questionnaires to the intended audience.
Focus groups
Focus groups are similar to the interviews, though the educator in this method seeks information from key people about the learning needs. Using this technique, the educator will be able to obtain the various groups’ perception regarding the program (Tseng et al., 2019). Ideally, the group will be able to argue off their ideas on the best way forward regarding the learning needs.
Observation
Observation allows the educator to assess the abilities of the students on the skills-based learning needs. Ideally, the technique will help the educator to conduct a program that changes the behavior of students concerning learning needs (Evans‐Agnew et al., 2017). Consequently, observation assists the...
