Nursing leadership profoundly impacts staff commitment, job satisfaction, and healthcare outcomes. Nurses can adopt various leadership models depending on their organizational needs and goals. Servant leadership style is one of the approaches that are becoming increasingly popular among nurse leaders and other healthcare professionals. Greenleaf proposed the theory of servant leadership, in which leaders serve their followers and seek to bring the best out of their employees and develop and improve sustainability within the organization (Aij & Rapsaniotis, 2017). Unlike conventional leadership styles where the employees were expected to serve their leaders, servant leadership focuses on employee well-being and building productive relationships. Nurse leaders should be aware of their leadership styles, traits, and practices and communicate effectively with the employees to improve productivity, commitment, and healthcare outcomes.
As a healthcare provider and a nurse leader, I would adopt the servant leadership style because of the traits and practices associated with the model. A servant leader is expected to have empathy, listening skills, persuasion, awareness, healing, commitment to other people's growth, stewardship, foresight, conceptualization, and focus on community building (Setyaningrum et al., 2020). Servant leaders recognize that their awareness of leadership style is critical for organizational development. They engage employees and followers in the decision-making process and enhance their overall awareness and quality of the workplace environment. Servant leaders value and develop people by serving, believing, and non-judgmentally listening to their followers (Aij & Rapsaniotis, 2017). Leaders that have adopted the servant leadership model also inspire and motivate others by providing encouragement, affirmation, and opportunities for growth and learning. They also display authenticity by being open, creative, accountable, and ready to learn from the employees. Besides, the servant leadership style promotes ethical and caring behaviors among employees and their leaders. Servant leadership is characterized by authenticity, community building, and valuing and developing others.
Servant leadership style has strong implications for nursing and healthcare practices. Servant leadership strategies have been observed in exceptional nurse leaders. They volunteer, speak up, and advocate for nurses and elevate them to positions that they all feel valued and respected as employees (Best, 2020). Servant nurse leaders also demonstrate altruistic calling, care, and compassion towards nurses working under their supervision.
Integrating the servant leadership model into nursing practice is useful in building meaningful and productive relationships at the workplace and creating a strong, collaborative, and sustainable foundation.
