Health promotion allows people to control their health and its determinants, leading to improved health. Health care professionals play an essential role in ensuring that the communities they serve. The approaches in health promotion include advocacy, education, social marketing, education, and legislation. Nurses play an essential role in promoting better health promotion activities in their communities by providing holistic solutions to health-related problems in the community they serve. The objectives of health promotion strategies include ensuring that people in a community acquire the skills to control their health, promote better health decisions, change policies that harm health, and prevent diseases. This essay will analyze a health promotion intervention in tackling the use of drugs by Hispanic adolescents.
Drug abuse is a global health issue that poses a significant threat to the health of the users. The population of Hispanics in America has been on the increase in the last decade. The community consists of Columbians, Cuban, Mexican Americans, and Dominicans. Hispanic teens, compared to the other minority groups, have a higher rate of drug abuse. These abuses include marijuana, alcohol, leisure prescription drugs, and cocaine. In their early teens, the Hispanic youth have the highest rates of smoking, marijuana, and drinking than other ethnic groups in the United States (Schinke, Schwinn, Hopkins, & Wahlstrom, 2016). They, therefore, are at the highest risk of developing drug abuse problems as teenagers. These high rates of abuse among Hispanic teens stem from peer pressure, negative role models, family influences, misperception of the risks involved in drug use, and access to these drugs. The Hispanic family is faced with challenges of acculturation that lead to drug abuse, especially for those who have immigrated to the United States (Sparks, Tisch, & Garner, 2013). These issues make them vulnerable to drug abuse to cope with the challenges that come with the new environment. It is therefore very likely that family and peer pressure will influence teenagers.
The higher rates of drug abuse among the Hispanic youth are also associated with mental, physiological changes. A study conducted Marijuana use among the Hispanic youth increased at a higher rate doubling from 13% to 27% in eighteen years (Marzell, Sahker, Pro, & Arndt, 2017). These statistics show a need for health promotion programs among this community, especially for teenagers who have recently immigrated to the United States. The study further noted that the highest number of drug users is 15-17 years. It suggests a need for early interventions for better health promotions for teens in this age group. This health promotion project is related to substance abuse. According to the health people indicator, over 22 million Americans have struggled with a drug and alcohol problem. The health impact of substance abuse has negative implications, including teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and motor vehicle accidents (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 202...
