He requests a specific barbiturate, Seconal, as a sleep aid, asking for a month's supply. On further questioning, he states that he wakes up every morning at four, tired but unable to go back to sleep. He admits that he rarely leaves his house during the day, stating that he has no interest in the activities he used to find enjoyable.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease that causes joint pain. Patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis experience longer morning stiffness and fatigue in addition to skin, kidneys and lung inflammation. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that can be inherited genetically (Ronald & , 1998). Pain, insomnia and fatigue may hinder patients from doing practices which they find enjoyable and that affects patients’ mental health leading to depression.
A depressed Rheumatoid Arthritis patient is less likely to have adequate sleep because of pain and lung inflammation. Most patient decide to abuse barbiturates like Seconal which helps to fight insomnia.
