Article: Liu, Q., & Peng, Y. (2015). Corruption in college admissions examinations in China. International Journal of Educational Development, 41, 104-111.
Article summary:
Liu and Peng carried out a study on the rates of corruption on the admissions exams of China. The survey involved different students in the field of arts and other major courses across different universities in China. The magnitude of the corruption was measured, and an analysis carried out to determine the causes and consequences of such corruption. Results indicated an approximation of 15.8% objectivity corruption and 47.3% subjective level of corruption (Liu & Peng, 2015). The following causes of corruption where identified: A high level of corruption propensity, poor examination designs, insufficient transparency, high-income expectations from the future careers, and, the subjects' tolerance of corruption. Liu and Peng argue out that the high levels of corruption have lowered the trust that the students had on faculties and staff in the colleges. As a result, this has resulted in increased levels of bribery in the incoming young examinees hence creating an endless cycle of corruption.
Strengths: effectiveness of the data collected
Given an examination that would help in the determination of someone's future, then it is clear that students would be willing to do anything to ensure that they pass that exam to ensure that they have a successful future. Therefore, the cause of corruption listed by Liu and Peng bring out the strengths of this paper. For instance, the promise of a well-paying career after college is one of the factors that could result in a student into bribing the examiners so that they can score good grades. The entry examinations act as a basis for the student's career development journey. Hence, students should ensure that they score the best even if it means bribing someone. As well, the need to prosper has resulted in a generation that is nurtured in the ways of corruption because they believe that it is the only way through which an individual can be successful in life (Zhang, 2016). In addition, the lack of transparency in the supervision and marking of the examination is another strong reason as to why a student would want to bribe the examiners to score good grades. The existence of transparency would have ensured that the students are guaranteed a good outcome of their study efforts. Therefore, the causes of corruption in college entrance examinations are the main strengths of this article.
