The facility design process describes the procedure for laying out an infrastructure and the activities involved for its full operation. This paper highlights the steps of facility planning, the benefits of pre-design planning, and the rationale or decision process for renovating or replacing a healthcare facility.
Steps of Facility Planning
Facility planning acknowledges that every decision made in healthcare planning directly impacts the organization. The steps include pre-design planning, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and occupancy. Pre-design planning is the analysis stage that occurs after the organization avails some form of funding (Halawa et al., 2020). During this phase, the facility planning team conducts studies to evaluate the proposed site and the budget. They also observe the most effective changes and select the options most suited to their needs. One of the benefits of the pre-planning stage is due diligence.
Due diligence is researching and assessing the proposed site and location to determine its suitability. The design team must understand the site or space before moving forward with the design work. By conducting due diligence, the team will understand the possibilities and impossibilities within the office space. Information gathered at this stage will enable the team to develop a well-informed and well-defined program to fit the physician's needs (Hoadley et al., 2010). In addition to due diligence, pre-design planning helps ensure that the project is achievable from the financial and chronological viewpoint.
