Define patient compliance and explain its importance in your field.
As defined by Beena & Jose (2013), patient compliance refers to the conduct and/or behavior of the patient in adhering or following the advice of the clinician or any healthcare provider. This is a significant factor especially in the improvement of patient outcomes, prevention of readmissions to hospitals, and reduction of health complications. Moreover, patient compliance is also crucial in the reduction of mortality rate and healthcare costs (Alikari & Zyga, 2014).
Identify the health care professionals’ role in compliance and give examples of ways in which the health care professional may actually contribute to noncompliance.
One of the main roles of the health care providers in the compliance of patients is to provide sufficient and appropriate information about the treatment to the patient and the patient’s family. This would also include patient education wherein materials and resources will be provided to further encourage the patient’s compliance (Alikari & Zyga, 2014).
An example in which the health care professional may contribute to noncompliance is poor communication with the patient. If the patient fails to understand and comprehend the given instructions, this would most likely result in noncompliance. This can also be linked to insufficient information provided to the patient which would also result in noncompliance. Another factor is the way the health care provider behaves. If the healthcare professional is rude towards the patient and the family, there is less chance that the patient would adhere to what is asked of him (Kreofsky, 2013).
Compare compliance and collaboration.
The difference between compliance and collaboration is that compliance pertains to the behavior and attitude of the patient in following or adhering to the advice or instructions given by the health care provider regarding the treatment. This shows that the clinician has authority over the patient and the patient should obey and follow the clinician’s advice. Whereas in collaboration, the patient and the clinician are involved in an effective and mutual partnership to encourage compliance regarding the plan of care (Beena & Jose, 2013).
Compare and contrast patient education in the past with that practiced today.
Patient education in the past can be distinguished from the current practice by how it is implemented. In the past, patient education can be seen as a passive communication between the clinician and the patient wherein the health care professional gives advice to the patient regarding the treatment in which the patient should obey.
