Reflect on your experiences as a member of a clinical team. What makes a team effective in terms of achieving expected outcomes for patients and agencies? What situations or conditions make it difficult for teams to work together?
When there is open communication and coordination of activities among health care members, this fosters partnership and builds cohesion, especially when there is a shared vision (Sims, Hewitt & Harris, 2015). This is also necessary to respond to different health needs and communication protocols are prioritized so that members understand what is expected of them. Having clear roles and sharing success affect how the team members act as there are specifications on accountability and authority, as well as known decision making procedures. Allowing members to participate and share information was also an important factor that was associated with team success. Supporting the health care teams should include access to resources and evaluating outcomes where there are adjustments depending on where the health care team members are able to achieve the outcomes including better patient outcome, quality and safety of care.
