Scholarly Activity Summary
Overview
The scholarly activity that I participated in comprised quality improvement committees. The target market for this activity was healthcare workers (HCWs), comprising physicians and nursing staffs. The benefit of this scholarly activity to me was the fact it taught me the steps that I can take as a nurse to prevent the occurrence of nosocomial infections in the hospital.
Problem
The quality improvement committees were aimed at solving the problem of health care-associated infections (HAIs) at the hospital. It is notable that HAIs are also commonly referred to as nosocomial infections. HAIs are a significant practice problem considering that about 2.5 million HAIs happen every year in America alone (Fox et al., 2015). These HAIs are associated with more than 88,000 patient deaths and financial costs of more than $4.5 billion every year. Deaths of patients as a result of these infections are often caused by substandard and inadequate practice by medical professionals, especially poor hand hygiene. It is a problem for hospitalized patients, healthcare workers, and hospitals alike (Fox et al., 2015). It is particularly a major problem for patients who are critically ill. Such patients are at an increased risk of HAIs; a risk that, in fact, increases their morbidity as well as mortality (Fox et al., 2015). By taking part in the scholarly activity of quality improvement committees, a nurse can learn ways of reducing HAIs.
Solution
The solution to the proposed practice problem addressed by the scholarly activity is for the healthcare workers, nurses in particular, maintaining proper hand hygiene all the time. They should constantly avoid poor hand hygiene. This solution addresses the problem by preventing the occurrence of HAIs. In healthcare settings, infection control and prevention specialists maintain that hand hygiene is a very significant intervention in reducing the spread of infec...
