While learning about medical billing and coding activities, I understood their importance in understanding the medical needs for a specific condition and making effective diagnosis assessments. Medical coding played an essential role for health practitioners to communicate effectively and carry out informed analyses on various diseases. Knowing the importance of knowledge has helped me pay more attention and gain interest in the topic. It will help me while analyzing and tracking various conditions and making medical decisions.
While looking at the medical and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) (code D47.2), I learned some diseases could be related but at the same time different. The condition symbolizes a paraprotein in an individual’s blood (ICD-10-CM Code D47.2, n.d). We can differentiate the condition from other disorders of close resemblances through medical billing and coding, such as multiple myeloma. However, I learned that MGUS is different from diseases like multiple myeloma because its symptoms include lower levels of antibodies and plasma cells in the bone marrow (ICD-10-CM Code D47.2, n.d). It also reveals no signs or challenges and has no listed treatment. On the other hand, multiple myeloma grows at about 1.5% each year (ICD-10-CM Code D47.2, n.d), making doctors recommend the condition to be monitored yearly.
Another essential lesson learned from MGUS is the importance of coding in making medical decisions and diagnostic assessments.
