Mammography is an X-ray procedure used to detect malignant changes in women‘s breasts. The device can be used to diagnose symptomatic women as well as a screening test for asymptomatic females. The following are current agreed recommendations for screening women with breast cancer:
Women aged 40-44 may opt for a mammogram procedure for its potential benefits. This, however, happens after an in-depth discussion with clinicians on both potential risks and benefits of screening mammography (Arevalo et al., 2016). Additionally, females aged 40-50 should be screened every one to two years to decrease the cases of breast tumor mortality.
The American Cancer Society recommends that a mammogram on women aged 51-70 should be done at a frequency of two years. The society has also proved that screening women after two years under this age gives them many benefits which include reducing risks such as false-positive results and over-treatment. Furthermore, many health organizations have recommended that women over 70 years may continue with mammograms regularly as long as their health is stable.
