HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION: MANAGING HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
Managing Health Care Professionals Case Study:
Dr. O’Connor was known for his hot temper and drinking. Although he claimed never to come to work under the influence, nurses, physicians, and other coworkers had their doubts, and several expressed their alarm to their supervisors. The emergency room needed coverage, and it was hard to find physicians who would work the graveyard shift, so little was done to address these concerns. One night, Dr. O’Connor walked across a clearly marked wet floor that the custodian had just mopped. When the angry janitor protested loudly and pointed to the bright yellow sign and the offending footprints, Dr. O’Connor took a swing at the other man and a fistfight ensued.

Introduction
In a workplace, misunderstandings, misconducts, and misbehaviours are inevitable secondary to the differences in personalities, cultural background, and personal issues. Due to the existing differences, the administration should create a committee that shall resolve problems related to these. Frequently, the assigned committee is the human resource (HR) department. This department is responsible for creating balance in the workplace by coordinating the issues between the employees and the employers. Furthermore, the HR department is accountable for reporting the details of the progress of the employees and the department. Through this method, there will be a better understanding of the administration and its employees (Joshi, 2016).
The objective of this paper is to discuss the case of Dr. O’Connor in relation to the power of the HR and administrative departments.
Key Facts
The following are the known facts in the incident:
* Dr. O’Connor frequently went to work under the influence of alcohol.
* Other employees in the hospital alerted their supervisors concerning Dr. O’Connor’s activities.
* The janitor placed and an indicator that the recently mopped floor is still wet.
* Dr. O’Connor walked across the wet floor, leaving footprints.
* The janitor allegedly complained “loudly” against Dr. O’Connor’s misbehaviour.
* Dr. O’Connor allegedly punched the janitor after hearing the janitor’s dissents.
Administrative Solution
The administrator has the right to apprehend employees who conduct misbehavior in a work environment, especially when the employees include health professionals whose sole duty is to protect the patients. The best way to mitigate the situation is to consult all the parties involved and thoroughly analyze the situation. Both sides shall be given the right to speak. Moreover, the employees shall be asked to provide evidence on the matter. All of these are necessary to gain balance within the workplace (Sonnenstuhl & Trice, 2018).
Since Dr. O’Connor has a responsibility to treat patients, any form of substance abuse will not be tolerated. Research has shown that substance abusers do not dwell on a single substance. They typically use multiple substances at once. Thus, referral to psychiatric care may be necessary (Sonnenstuhl & Trice, 2018).
The administrative solution should return the balance in the workplace. To achieve balance, compromise is necessary. Hence, referral to psychiatric care and disciplinary action may be imposed.
Referral to Psychiatric Care
The management is required to adhere to the industrial rules of society at all times. Due to this, the following must be established before the referral to psychiatric car...
