Purpose








The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to identify and effectively manage conflicts that arise in care delivery settings resulting in better management of patient care, including appropriate delegation. You will gain insight into conflict management strategies and develop a plan to collaborate with a potential nurse leader about the conflict and its impact in a practice setting.








Directions









  1. Read Finkelman (2016), Chapter 13: Improving Teamwork: Collaboration, Coordination, and Conflict Resolution, section on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, pp. 324-333.

  2. Write a 5-7-page paper (not including the title or References pages). Follow APA format. Cite the course textbook and two scholarly sources.

  3. Observe nurses in a care delivery setting. Identify a recurring conflict with the potential to negatively impact patient care. This should be from your practice setting or prelicensure experiences.

  4. Provide details of what happened, including who was involved, what was said, where it occurred, and what was the outcome that led you to decide the conflict was unresolved.

  5. Identify the type of conflict. Explain your rationale for selecting this type.

  6. Summarize (in your own words) the four stages of conflict, as described in our textbook, and how they relate to your example. Do not use quotations. 

  7. Describe how you would collaborate with a nurse leader to reach consensus on the best strategy to deal with the conflict

Sometimes, conflict may arise in the healthcare setting, especially between the nurses and physicians. The conflict may result in a situation where the troublesome person is avoided which may result in the patient getting hurt. The patient may miss the opportunity to receive better treatment between the medical staff members. Therefore, the assignment focuses on how to manage conflicts which may occur in the healthcare delivery to ensure better patient management including adequate delegation of tasks.
Description of Observed Conflict
Currently, I witnessed a conflict that occurred between a doctor and a nurse as a result of a misunderstanding between each other’s role. The nurse had worked in the section for almost five years, which gives him enough experience in serving patients. Surely, every patient recognized how he was smart and techno-savvy and ever wondered if they would need the service of a doctor. Specifically, he was always regarded by patients as the most thorough and the kindest person in the department. Moreover, people always say that if they would need a doctor in the section, then they would prefer going to him.
However, he was approached by a doctor to explain why the blood pressure medication for a given patient was being held up for more than two weeks. The nurse replied that he did know and needs to look into it before giving feedback. The physician understands that it is the role of the nurse to keep the records and notify him of such information, but this did not happen. As a result, the physician got more agitated and pressed further demanding an explanation. They shouted at the nurse that there is no need for him sitting for more than 30 minutes waiting to see the records of the patient’s medication and pressure readings. However, knowing that he could not offer anything positive to the doctor, the nurse decided to walk away claiming that she had only taken care of the patient for 2 hours and did not have such information.
The situation drew other medical staff members, and the doctor came in with a full picture of a patient whom the nurse has known for more than two months. The situation got worse as people started to question the role of the nurse. Maybe he engaged in another role including that of the physician and forgot to focus on what he was supposed to do. Further, the manner in which he walked away from the doctor after knowing that he could not provide the records needed also contributed more to the conflict. Therefore, the conflict resulted as a result of a misunderstanding of the nurse role and the reaction of the doctor in requesting an explanation.
The disagreement is classified as an interpersonal conflict which is a fight between two individuals. The conflict may arise due to variation in employees’ personalities as seen in the way in which the doctor demanded the records. The doctor shouted at the nurse in a commanding voice which resulted into them disagreeing, which is shown in the manner in which the nurse decided to walk away pretending that he had only known the patient for 2 hours.
