In some countries, traditional healers play a key role in health care even though they don't have professional training. They provide immediate and extensive primary care to the sick and those in need. In addition, some traditional practices, such as circumcision in some African countries, represent a rite of passage from childhood to manhood (Wilken et al. 2010). Feeling pain during circumcision is a sign of strength; thus, no medication is used to relieve pain or antibiotics. Further, some people cannot afford conventional treatment, giving traditional healers a significant edge.
Governments do not recognize the role of traditional healers, and sometimes they might restrict their activities, creating a line between protecting the culture and protecting people's health.
