The act is a historic legislation piece aiming to expand the healthcare sector and regulate insurance companies' practices. The former president of the United States, Barack Obama, signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on 23 March 2010 (Gostin, Hyman & Jacobson, 2017). It is a 900+ paged document that contains several healthcare provisions to America's community and public health. The act's three primary elements are healthcare insurance, expanding Medicaid to low-income adults, and supporting medical care innovations to reduce general healthcare costs. Nurses play a significant role in enforcing the law by implementing medical homes and educating the public on its provision and rights.
ACA aims to provide affordable healthcare insurance to more people. Households that survive on incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level enjoy subsidies in the form of prime tax credit ("Affordable Care Act (ACA) - HealthCare.gov Glossary," n.d.). The federal poverty level is an annual income report the department of health and human services provides to determine a person's eligibility for certain benefits and programs like the children's health insurance program (CHIP) coverage and Medicaid.
