The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) occurs when there are high levels of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). The high ADH levels interfere with renal free water and cause low sodium levels (hyponatremia) and hyposmolality (McCance & Huether, 2018). When water intake is higher than the reduced urine output, water retention results in hyponatremia (Mentrasti et al., 2020). The ADH hormone is helpful for the kidneys in conserving water, and SIADH impairs water excretion. Sometimes diabetes mellitus can cause hyponatremia linked to osmotic diuresis, affecting urine sodium concentration (Liamis et al., 2017). When the ADH fails to work properly, fluid body retention increases.
Medications such as certain drugs for diabetes type 2, antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, heart anticonvulsants, anesthesia, and surgery under general anesthesia are some of the causes of SIADH.
