Adult learning theory explains how adult learning occurs as well as identify the styles appropriate to educate them. There are five main principles that define adult learning. As the concept is applied in businesses to train workers and enhance their skills. People tend to be more independent as they grow older. In this regard, learning in adults must be self-directed rather than instructor-based. All adults have a self-concept of being in charge and take responsibility for their actions. They must be treated as people who can take responsibility to learn effectively. Adults bring experience to learning, which is a resource for the person and those around him or her to learn (NHI, n.d.).
