The internet has significantly transformed how people access the world. With a click of a button, a person can access a massive range of materials, including educational links, apparel, sports information, music, remote dialogue, and, unfortunately, pornography. In reality, the internet has been both sources of promise and concern mainly to the young generation. For example, in the last ten years, the use of internet pornography has substantially increased among kids and young adults (Short et al., 2012).
In the play “internet is for porn,” Brynjamin Button narrates how the internet is excellent but exposes people to porn. He describes how porn has become more accessible in this era of the internet. In the United States, for example, over 40 million Americans visit porn sites. It is believed that 35% of all downloads across the world are pornographic material. It is further disturbing that over 30% of internet users have been exposed to unwanted pornographic material through ads, popups, and misdirected emails (Short et al., 2012). Consequently, this has led to positive and negative, including sexual addiction and dissatisfaction, relationship impairments, emotional distress, and interpersonal and relationship anguish, an increase in sexual knowledge and attitudes towards sex.
Maria Ahlin, in her presentation “Let’s talk Porn,” challenges old beliefs and myths about porn through solid facts, data, determination, and expertise – a subject many scholars have avoided at all costs. She replaces these commonly held views with precise facts, science, and real-life experiences. She points out serious health effects such as relationship aggression, emotional distress, sexual addiction, and violence. She demonstrates that consuming porn with morally unpleasant themes like violence, humiliation, and degradation can make people less sensitive or become overambitious (Ahlin, 2020). In her findings, she inherently links addiction and negative attitudes a point that is rather weak as each can exist without the other. However, she acknowledges porn when presented at the right age can improve sex education.
