Discussion: Searching Databases
When you decide to purchase a new car, you first decide what is important to you. If mileage and dependability are the important factors, you will search for data focused more on these factors and less on color options and sound systems.
The same holds true when searching for research evidence to guide your clinical inquiry and professional decisions. Developing a formula for an answerable, researchable question that addresses your need will make the search process much more effective. One such formula is the PICO(T) format.
In this Discussion, you will transform a clinical inquiry into a searchable question in PICO(T) format, so you can search the electronic databases more effectively and efficiently. You will share this PICO(T) question and examine strategies you might use to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question.
To Prepare:
Review the materials offering guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.
Review the Resources for guidance and develop a PICO(T) question of interest to you for further study.
By Day 3 of Week 4 ( June 19, 2019)
Post your PICO(T) question, the search terms used, and the names of at least two databases used for your PICO(T) question. Then, describe your search results in terms of the number of articles returned on original research and how this changed as you added search terms using your Boolean operators. Finally, explain strategies you might make to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question. Be specific and provide examples.

Nursing Evidence Base Practice: PICO (T) Question
PICO (T): Among terminally ill patients, does physician-assisted suicide (PAS) increase family satisfaction and patient comfort compared to active euthanasia?
A literature search was conducted using PubMed and EBSCOhost databases to compare family satisfaction and patient comfort between physician-assisted suicide (PAS) and active euthanasia. Besides taking an ethical perspective, the PICO (T) question examines the outcomes of two different interventions that are provided to terminally ill patients. In this context, the question seeks to explore both patient outcomes and the bereaved family satisfaction such as grief responses (Stajduhar et al., 2017). Preliminary searchers “terminally-ill patients,” “euthanasia,” “physician-assisted suicide,” “medical ethics,” “assisted dying,” “family satisfaction”, “patient comfort,” and “palliative care” revealed a number of medical papers related to euthanasia and patient-assisted suicide. A search on PubMed database using the search terms “physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia” generated 4024 articles. Condensing the search results by adding more search terms such as “family satisfaction” resulted in 4 articles on PubMed database. The initial search results on EBSCOhost generated 12,109 results, with 6320 articles. Adding Boolean operators such as “and” and “or” phrases condensed the search results to 1220 with 747 academic journals. The search was done for all publications on EBSCOhost database published between 1980 and 2019. While this wide range of publication dates will generate several articles, the search will include important articles that discuss how scholars have treated the issue over the years.
