I see myself fitting in the IOM recommendation 4: Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020 by completing my studies. Completing my bachelor’s degree is an important step in ensuring that I have the academic qualifications that IOM recommends for nurses. This is essential because it is through education that I will get to learn and understand more about nursing as a whole (Forbes & Hickey, 2009).
I also see myself fitting in the IOM recommendation 5: Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020. Basically, after completion of my bachelor’s degree and while working as a nurse practitioner, I plan to take a doctoral degree in nursing. A doctorate degree in nursing will be beneficial in helping further my career while also help me get into leadership roles. I have always wanted to become a leader such as a manager or an executive in a healthcare facility, and I believe that taking a doctorate degree will be a step forward to that dream (Forbes & Hickey, 2009). For example, I could venture into Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) that focuses on clinical practice-oriented form of leadership training.
Further, I see myself fitting in the IOM recommendation 6: Ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning. Personally, I plan to ensure that I accomplish personal and professional growth (Campbell, 2004). On a personal level, I will set standards of what I want to accomplish and work towards those goals. I will also make it a point to learn from failure and emphasize on achievements. At professional level, apart from advancing my education, I will keep collaborating and interacting with colleagues, organizations, and groups to learn new skills and better my nursing career. To achieve this, I will be questioning my environment and engaging in learning by actively finding learning opportunities such as attending nursing conferences.
