Instructional Strategies among Nurses
Introduction
There are emerging and innovative instructional practices as a nurse educator. Nursing being a field that requires a lot of clinical knowledge and skills for the welfare of not only the patient but also to his/her family in real-life situations, requires competent health care professionals in this ever-changing world. The foundation of what is being practiced, like in many professions, is critical thinking. The nurse educator must, therefore, create an environment that nurtures essential philosophical thinking. In addition to this, the educator should use innovative applications that are evidence-based and relevant. The instructional practices should integrate the theoretical aspect as well as the practical aspect to improve the student's psychomotor and communication skills. This essay, therefore, tries to look at some of the best instructional practices in nursing such as simulations, role-play, and brain drain.
To start with, the nurse instructor should apply simulation. This is a strategy to mirror real-life situations to capture and solve a problem authentically. Just like in life-threatening professions like aviation, where trainee pilots get into a machine that simulates conditions in the air while flying, also nurses need state of the art simulation machines. Over the years, student nurses have practiced taking blood pressure recordings amongst themselves as part of the simulation. On top of that, they have been using a jointed model of the human body, the manikins. They have also rehearsed giving injections to oranges. Some other ways such as forming cooperative learning groups and using different ways make nurses able to work with different group members. Examples of ways to be used in forming the group are by pairing up partners; the learning is paired up with an individual whom they share the same thing as color, names. Pick a card; the learners are selected to pick up the cards and those who select the same group of cards are set to be in the same cooperative group and the final one is by use of the chalkboard list; here, the nurses are selected according to the time they collect their assignment, the names of the nurse are written on the chalkboard and when a certain number of students accumulate they form a group. Times have changed, and thanks to technology, these traditional methods of simulation have been replaced with various kinds of life-like anatomical models. These technologically made manikins have manifest signs and respond to treatment decisions. The use of simulation has, therefore, become a common practice in nursing education.
As mentioned above, simulations enable the reenactment of real-life scenarios that mimic reality. Due to technological advancement, manikins have been computer programmed to respond like real-life human bodies. There is the use of audiovisual recording devices, which, when used by a nurse tutor, enables the student to review their performances after the exercise. The medical equipment and other medical supplies should be available to make this real and authentic. This virtual computer-generated reality application offers an exciting learning exper...
